Other stuff

I have been flying through the Harry Potter books, and am loving them. Super fun, well written, really cool stories. I've heard the Lost writers talk about how much them like Harry Potter, and I can see why. Harry Potter is like Lost in book form.

I've gotten a bunch of new music in the past week or two, but haven't absorbed most of it. I can say this much however:

Sigur Ros- Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust. Super good. I'm loving it, and I can't wait to see them in October. A pretty big shift in sound for them. Poppy (I know!), actually singable, and dare I say happy? There's even a song in English, though you can't really understand what he's saying anyway. But there are actually chorus's and discernible melodies, and it's still really pretty of course. There's even acoustic guitars. If you're a fan, get it. If you're not, you're dumb.

Damiera- Quiet Mouth, Loud Hands. I was really excited about this one, and have been mostly disappointed. I keep trying, thinking maybe it'll grow on me, but it hasn't so far. It doesn't really do anything for me. I know they have 3 new guys (out of 4) in the band, and they didn't want to make the same record twice, but the outcome is boring. Maybe they should have made the last one again. They try a few really new things, like a song that is a blatant Maroon 5 rip off, which is kind of fun I guess. Gone are the nearly shred-worthy guitars, crazy mathy-ness, and interesting melodies, replaced by... yawn. I don't even know what. I find myself forgetting it's even on after about 4 or 5 songs. So sad.

To be absorbed soon are:
Amos Lee- Last Days at the Lodge
Portishead- Third
My Bloody Valentine- Isn't Anything

Good stuff is happening with the band (Carts Before Horses). We started working on our demos again and have them almost finished, not to mention that we've been trying out a singer that we're pretty excited about. More on that as we figure stuff out.

Hope your 4th was good! We'll be having everyone over sometime soon for a hang out at the new place... we're almost unpacked, yay!

Reading material 7/7/08

In between reading Harry Potter sometimes I read up some political stuff on the internet. Like this stuff:

Energy Myths from Investor's Business Daily. Please, please, please read this. They take the main 3 or 4 oil myths and explain why they're crap. It's quick and easily understandable. Also see Obama's Dry Hole from the Wall Street Journal and An America First Energy Plan from RealClearPolitics.com.

The true test of Obama's Iraq shift from the Politico.com. Has a couple quotes from Obama earlier this year talking about Iraq. On the same topic, also see Daily Blog Buzz: Obama's "Refined" Positions.

Obama Ignorance Watch: What Do the Joint Chiefs Really Do? from The Weekly Standard. I'll give you a hint: he doesn't know what they do.

Obama's Abortion Obfuscations from the Weekly Standard.

The Democrats' foreign-policy game from the Christian Science Monitor. A lot of the Senate Dem's ideas and recent rhetoric is stupid and dangerous.

OBAMA STRIKES FIRST from DickMorris.com. The general election season has begun with Obama starting his first national ad. McCain could jump all over this ad if he had half a brain, since it has at least 1 blatent lie in it, but he probably won't because he sucks almost as much as Obama.

New and Not Improved from the New York Times. Some crazy liberals are pretty pissed about Obama's center field pandering. This guy's one of them.

5 myths about presidential campaign cash from Politico.com. Very informative. Goes through a few myths that both sides have been playing up a lot lately.

Focus on Economy Poses Problems for Candidates from the New York Times. Again, they both suck, so it's not surprising.

Obama's third response

Well, not really, but this parody of what he was trying to say is pretty funny.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Why am I laughing? Honestly, I am. Out loud. You could even say LOL if you were so inclinded. To answer that I'll cut and paste some select quotes from this article, just posted from the AP on yahoo.com: Obama wades into controversy with Iraq comments.

Obama was forced to call reporters back for a second news conference in Fargo, North Dakota, after he initially left open the possibility of revising his 16-month timetable for pulling U.S. combat forces from Iraq.

"Let me be as clear as I can be. I intend to end this war. My first day in office I will bring the joint chiefs of staff in and I will give them a new mission and that is to end this war," Obama told reporters in his second news conference.

But he added: "I would be a poor commander in chief if I didn't take facts on the ground into account."

At an earlier news conference, the Illinois senator had said he could "refine" his stance after he visits Iraq.

Obama, an early opponent of the war who made his stance a centerpiece of his Democratic presidential campaign, said he would not support a long-term U.S. presence in Iraq but wanted to ensure any troop withdrawal was orderly and safe.

"I've always said I would listen to commanders on the ground. I've always said the pace of withdrawal would be dictated by the safety and security of our troops and the need to maintain stability," he told reporters on arrival in North Dakota.

"That assessment has not changed, and when I have a chance to meet with some of the commanders on the ground I'm sure I'll have more information and will continue to refine my policies."

You've got to be kidding me. Someone please please please explain to me why you/anyone is still taking this guy seriously? Does his entire 19 year old college student fan base just ignore 100% of what he says? What a freaking joke! He's been parading around since day one about how he was going to pull everyone out of Iraq the second he got into office. And now he's going to sit and think about it for a while first? He's so scared of pissing off his kook base (ie Moveon.org people) that he has to go back and make a second news conference to "clarify" what he meant the first time. But I thought he was the most amazing speaker this world had ever seen? How could he not be clear enough the first time?

What an complete embarrassment. Glad to know he's still that "new kind of politician" guy. Speaking of embarrassing, check out this article on the same topic from Obama's campaign headquarters, The New York Times, and marvel at the amount of spin they're able to put on a clearly ridiculous set of statements. They take the same comments, which any normal person would say "wow, that sounds pretty inconsistent," and are able to make it sound like it's all one straight and narrow line of thinking that he's been planning from the beginning. Yay for ridiculous, obvious bias!

More good things you should read

I can't really claim responsibility for finding all of these articles, since a lot of them were recommended reading from various news/political blogs I read, but since I'm a nice guy I thought I'd compile them all on here for you, my faithful reader. And there are some good ones today too.

We Can Lower Oil Prices Now from the Wall Street Journal. If you read nothing over the next week, please read this article. It very nicely and clearly explains why gas is going up and how it can be fixed in the short term. And anyone with half a brain will be able to infer after reading it that Obama, Harry Reid, and Nancy Pelosi are all lying pieces of crap with nothing but controlling as much of our lives as possible on their minds. Which should surprise no one.

Who's smearing whom? from Politico.com. Talks about Obama and his constant defensiveness and how little McCain's camp has actually said anything in his direction. As a contrast, Obama's cronies are constantly attacking McCain in a fairly serious fashion.

Global Warming as Mass Neurosis from the Wall Street Journal. Great article about how since so much of global warming has been disproven, it all pretty much falls onto liberal's faith.

Occupying the centre from Economist.com. Ha! Obama is acting like a politician? Never saw that one coming.

Obama's real patriotism problem from USA Today. Written by Jonah Goldberg, who is awesome. Talks about how liberals don't understand patriotism, and conservatives explain it poorly.

Big government a dead end for GOP from Politico.com. Republicans don't win when they act like Democrats.
